Walkers Are Welcome

Wellington in the County of The Wrekin (formerly in Shropshire) was awarded Walkers are Welcome status in June, 2010.

The 2014 Wellington Walking Festival ran from June 16th - June 22nd 2014

Details of the 2015 Festival will appear in due course on our Festival page

In 2014 we repeated many of the themed walks from our previous festivals, and included some new ones. There were some 'just walks' too.

Sunday 15th June

    Wellington Walkers are Welcome regular 3rd Sunday walk - The Wrekin Summit by an alternative route.

    Meet outside Wellington Leisure Centre at 2 pm, or, by arrangement, go directly to the Forest Glen.

Seemed to be enjoyed. There was an option to take the ridge path from the cages of stones near the Forest Glen, this was a revelation to some.

Monday 16th June

2. Bus Walk: Uckington to Wellington

Bring a packed lunch and fare or bus pass.

Estimated arrival time in Wellington, 3.30 pm

 

Meet at 10.50am, for the 81  Bus at 11.05 am.

Wellington Bus Station.

 

Easy, linear walk. 7 miles

3. Explore the first part of the Trundle

This is a multi-user trail providing safe access for disabled users and those with pushchairs.  In April only the first section of the trail had been completed although the route to New Works Lane had been cleared & widened. Come and see if the whole section to New Works Lane is in place by June.

 

We will be at the start from 10.00 am - 12.00 noon.

4.  First steps with a map and compass

For those who like walking but don't have the confidence to use a map. By the end you should be able to use a map, make the map line up with the features on the ground, understand the basics of scale and map symbols and know how to use a compass.

5. A Journey Through Wellington's Past - Three thousand years of history and heritage in two hours (or thereabouts!)

6. Shrewsbury and Newport Canal Trust Canal Walk & Wappenshall Wharf Tour. 

The walk will follow part of the canal system and visit the guillotine lock at Hadley.  Afterwards there will be refreshments and a tour of the wharf at Wappenshall.  Expected finish time 16.30.

 "Just to say how much we enjoyed the Wappenshall Canal Basin walk of the recent Walking Festival. It was extremely interesting and hopefully in the next few years it will become a new tourist attraction for the area. 7. Come and Try It   -   Orienteering. 

5km Wrekin Summit Course, all on paths. 17 controls to spot, plus historical notes.

Start between  4 pm  and  6  pm  (allow 2 hours). Maps available from Wrekin.

8. Talk on the work of the SNCT, focussing on Wappenshall.

At Wappenshall  the plan is to restore the wharf, and create a national museum to Thomas Telford. Bar snacks will be available to purchase.

 9. ALL  Day Walk  - To and from Little Wenlock

About 11 miles. Bring a picnic or visit the Huntsman for lunch.

12. Flora walk Ercall and Limekiln Wood.  

A walk through the Shropshire Wildlife Trust nature reserve around the Ercall quarries & Limekiln Wood. We may see orchids in flower in the grassland by the limekilns.

Why not start or finish with a meal at the Buckatree, dinner service  starts at 18.30? (15% discount offered)

13. Shawbirch Walking for Health Walk

A walk pointing out areas of historical interest.

15. Sunnycroft: A garden of tea parties and turnips

Free entry to the grounds; take a tour with our gardeners and learn about the estate from social entertaining to self-sufficiency. 1 hour. Bring NT card if you are a member. The tea room will be open until 5.00pm - TLC card holders receive 20% discount.

18. Wrekin Landscape and Wildlife Photography Walk

Suitable for beginners / novices.  Advice given on photographic techniques and equipment, locations etc. 3 Hours

23. ALL DAY walk  with the Telford and East Shropshire Group of the Ramblers.

Use tracks, field paths and lanes to go via Leighton Park (Mary Webb’s birthplace), Severn Way, Eyton Racecourse to Uppington, returning SW of the Wrekin, along Spout Lane to Little Wenlock.. Bring packed lunch. 13 miles.
